KOTA KINABALU: One of Malaysia's youngest ever MPs Affendy Stephens died of a heart condition at about 4am yesterday while on holiday in Singapore with his family. He was 50.

He leaves behind wife Zalina Kamal and three daughters aged between three and 15.

The second son of the late former Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri and Sabah Chief Minister, Tun Mohammed Fuad Stephens, Affendy was elected Marudu MP under a Parti Berjaya ticket at age 23 in 1982 and served for a term.

He joined Umno when the party expanded its wing to Sabah in 1991 and held various positions, including as Penampang Umno division deputy head and as its youth chief before opting out of active politics.

A businessman, Affendy, who had also served as Kiulu People Development Leader, is a director in several companies in Kuala Lumpur and here.

Her sister Faridah Stephens told the New Straits Times that Affendy had breathing problem and chest discomfort and sought treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on April 9.

After undergoing an angiogram procedure, he was discharged last Sunday and was supposed to return to Kuala Lumpur, where he is now based, today.

Affendy's mother Toh Puan Rahimah Stephens, a former state minister, and other family members had rushed to Singapore on Friday to be with him..

"We never expected this. He seems to be alright last night (yesterday night) and was in a jolly mood playing with his kids and talking to us," Faridah said.

Affendy's body was brought from Singapore to his in-laws residence at 56 Jalan BJ/4, Taman Bukit Jaya in Bukit Antarabangsa in Kuala Lumpur and burial would be at Jalan Ampang Muslim cemetery after prayers at Kampung Baru Mosque at 9.30am today (Friday, 17 April 2009)..

Rest in Peace Affendy..

His father, the late Tun Mohd Fuad Stphens, then Sabah Chief Minister, died in a plane crash on June 6, 1976, along with other Sabah cabinet ministers including Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Datuk Chong Thian Vun and Darius Binion.

Their plane - a Nomad, crashed in shallow waters off Sembulan, while attempting to land in the Kota Kinabalu airport from Labuan.

The incident shocked the nation...

Affendy's mother, Toh Puan Hajjah Rahimah Stephens was appointed as Sabah's first ever woman cabinet minister in 1976.

Affendy was also active in sports such as Cricket.

YAB Dato Najib was not yet 23 when he became MP of Pekan in early 1976. The late Datuk Affandi/Affendi (Richard Stephens), born Jan 1959 was most definitely 23 when he became MP in 1982. But he surely was one of the youngest ever Datuks. When I checked the Parliamanet Hansard of August 1983 he had a Datuk honorific: he was merely 24.
